Survivor Challenge #4: A Bridge You Must Cross

		trolls


a tooth broke
	crown gone
	it wasn’t caramels
				or gum
	just a regular dinner that night
		and				pop
		off comes the crown
			my molar no longer a queen
				it’s given up it’s crown to be a false prophet
			to be false
				but look so real
					the monarch hiding rotten beyond
								       beneath
	
tonight i’m snaggle-toothed
		scared to kiss, scared to chew
	sharpness screaming to be taken
and I’m terrified of the dental pain
		this doctor new to me 
					i worry and 		apparently
					i worship at the gate of my mouth
		begging my crownless queen not to hurt
				not to make me scream and squirm
					when the dentist begins
			
i have options now
	dental insurance and cash to spare
		i have options now
	implant over bridge
			because i cross that bridge everyday that i chew
				cleaning with tiny tools and floss
				swishing the food from underneath
					picking it out
				spending time and energy i would rather not

i’ve crossed that bridge and made the next choice
		i’d rather spend my time than be inconvenienced so
	i’d rather not cross that bridge again

		all hail the queen
			your reign is over

Thanks. So far, other than being sharp, I don't feel it (it has had a root canal). But eeeeeeeek I don't want to deal with it being pulled... I will, obviously, but ugh.

Yup, I am going with the implant. What's not in the poem is it takes almost a year. Pull the tooth. Heal. Bone graft. Heal. Screw implanted. Heal. Implant tooth placed. Heal.

But I seriously hate the bridge I have on the other side. So, time will tell. I get the tooth pulled on the 2nd.

Aw, geez. Dental stuff is the wooooorrrrst. Cute though, I love the 'molar no longer a queen'. It's nice poetic imagery, but it feels a little playful as well.

Dental work is the suckitude, but here we are and here we go...

Very clever take on the prompt, though OUCH. I have frequent dental work due to radiation poisoning in my lungs (yay, thyroid cancer treatments), so this is quite realistic to me.

Implants are a long, long process, but I think they are worth it. My last implant was a 10-month process! So I feel for you.

Again, I like the play on "the bridge you must cross." Great work, former team mate. :)

Thankfully the tooth already had a root canal. Yeah, it'll take a year to get the implant, but everyone says it's far superior.

Ooh this is a clever take on the prompt. I was wondering if anyone would go the teeth route as far bridges go. I really love the connection of a tooth crown to a queen. That’s really good and unexpected in a wonderful way! I like how you take something as daunting as dental work and make it this lyrical piece. I enjoyed it!

Thanks. This one did not come naturally. I had many, many false starts to end up with dental poetry. LOL

Ugh. Teeth are the worst. I had a crown and a root canal earlier this year and this time was better than last but I miss the days of having any “all original teeth.”

I had two wisdom teeth taken out, and the one that has the bridge, so I hear ya with "all my original teeth." I think this might be a sign that I'm old...

Ugh, I know this pain all too well. I have really weak teeth; in the last year I have had probably four root canals and crowns, and I broke one of my teeth in half biting down on a pickle of all things! I have learned to stay away from Swedish Fish and caramels and other chewy, sticky things, but I never could have imagined that I would break a tooth on a pickle.

And then having to spend your time until you can get to the dentist managing that excruciating tooth pain... I feel this. Good work!

Thankfully that tooth already had had a root canal. So it's annoying as heck and i bite my tongue a lot, but no real pain. Dentist Wednesday Morning!

This is such a creative take on the topic — though gaaaah I'm so sorry you have to deal with that! The crown really should have just stayed where it belonged and not tried to abdicate its throne!

I wondered if someone would take the "dental bridge" approach with this one!

I get such a kick out of the imagery here, with the queen casting off her crown and becoming troublesome and existing only to bring you pain!

And I can understand the choice of an implant over a bridge, if you can afford it. One is not just artificial but requires so much extra work, and the other is like having a fully functioning mouth! \o/
