Looking at my choices of topic I quickly latched onto sand and stars this week. I mean, I did just return from a lovely tropical honeymoon. My brain went through various iterations of poem starts or topics and they all came out damn cheesy. Too cheesy, voted out for sure cheesy. Ya know, just *that* cheesy. I don't like being that cheesy on a regular basis. And I did just get married in a fairytale castle at a puppet theatre, I've reached my quota for quite some time.

So this came to fruition. Slowly but surely this piece began in my head and found its way to my fingertips and onto my screen, and now yours.

		lost

how many things are lost to the ocean
lost
in the blue and black brine of the sea
	rings slipping unknown from fingers
ships stoic in the night capsized in the day
the ability to tread water stolen by the undertow

how many lives unknown
as waves lap onto the shore
	whispering apologies
			and warnings of danger

how many words do we throw carelessly
				(love and hate
				 never and forever
				 promises kept and broken)
	into the water
leaving them
		orphaned
with only sand and stars to guide them home

how many things are lost to the ocean
left with only sand and stars to guide them
	        	billowing in the saltwater tears
		sinking like stones to wrecks
coasting with the fish and coral

	how many things
			     are lost
