what is the essence of a person
is it the blood and bones that build us

or the way we handle ourselves 
when confronted with fear

the way we give ourselves to love

or the thoughts that whisper, alone, in the shower 
as water cascades over our naked selves

is it as simple as good or bad
something in between

is there even such a thing
as your essence
