FIRST is a "contest" where kids have built Lego Robots and then get to see how well they work. It's a great program and they need volunteers for the tournaments. I've had various jobs volunteering at these over the last couple years and Ian is usually a referee.

If you have some time and want to give back... Get in touch with Jill. Her info is at the bottom of the following information.

(I will be at the Nov. 21 google one, depending on how well I feel.)

Make a real difference by volunteering! Giving your time to help celebrate the achievements of
our young people confirms the importance of science,
technology, engineering and math to them.

The Northern California FIRST Lego League (FLL) program is
seeking adult judges and referees for upcoming tournaments
starting in November. FLL develops critical skills in
science and technology in a super-charged learning atmosphere.
The competition involves teams of students, ages 9 to 14.

Volunteers do not have to be engineers or involved in
technology - this is particularly true for judging the
project presentations and teamwork areas. Good training
materials for all judges and referees are available.

This year, over 300 teams from around Northern California will
be inspired to learn more about transportation issues and propose
solutions (related to this year's theme named, Smart Move).
FLL is an international program and an anticipated 150,000
young people from 50 countries will be participating in the
program this year.

The teams design, build, program and test an autonomous LEGO
Mindstorms robot engineered to solve challenges that relate to
real world transportation problems developed by experts in the
field.

In addition, the teams learn about and create an innovative
project solution that focuses on a relevant transportation
issue important to the team and their local community. Students
acquire skills such as problem solving, project management,
critical thinking and teamwork: skills necessary to their
future and the future of society.

The tournaments are fast moving, exciting and inspiring to see
so many young people excited about engineering and science.
It is one you will remember and well worth your time!
