Finding Serenity- LiveJournal Idol Week 9
Jul. 22nd, 2013 02:35 pmLife is often chaos. Between the “voices” in our heads ticking off items that need to get done, done, done and rehashing things already gone by and the constant barrage of information in this age of technology.
But I have found solace on rare vacation occasion with simple snorkelling. I’ve always wanted to snorkel it sounded fun. And one December my partner took me to Hawaii and we went.
IT. WAS. AMAZING.
It is that rare to find marrying of perfect calm and exhilaration.
I was nervous at first because I am not a strong swimmer, hell, I can barely swim to be honest. But I was gonna do this. We took a boat day trip out to some lovely reef. Put on our snorkel masks and flippers and *flop* in the water.
I was instantly transported. My grins were too big for the gear and water would seep into my mask, but once I learned how to keep my smiles smaller it was all good.
My body weight and size was perfect for snorkelling. I would just kick over to a pretty spot with lots of beautiful, peaceful fish and stay there. With the snorkel I didn’t have to come up for air and I just floated at the top. Just floated with this wonderful view of the fish.
And I was calm. There were no computers or televisions blaring more information into my head, begging for attention. Something about floating with the fishies quieted the constant ticking of my brain. It was just me. Floating. Seeing multi-colored fish swim by in schools and solo, moving with the currents. I was just there and part of something bigger.
I had found serenity.
I’ve gone snorkelling once since then, it was about 7 years in between. The good news is that I still found it. The calm exhilaration didn’t dissipate in those years. Even with more technology and more life to re-live in my head I can find calm. I can just float and have life be beautiful.
In about two weeks I take it to a new level. I’m taking SCUBA diving classes. I’m a little nervous, but it should be all good. I think I’ve found serenity and hope to catch more of it.
