                        Yes, and…

I remember asking my grandmother if she would die for me
I was at the bottom of the stairs
leaving after a typical weekend with her
I think even then
even young, I knew I was her favorite
felt the good and the bad that came with that
her face stumbled, parsing what I had just said
what her youngest grandchild just asked

funny, I don’t actually remember her answer
just the staircase and that look of shock and
							    surprise
that I had asked such a question

now I wonder what made me ask it
I think there was something in a book that I read
		something that covered the topic
		the romanticism of selflessness
I think I wanted to KNOW that someone loved me enough
that someone loved me enough to die for me
					more than they loved themselves

and it is such an unfair question
and so out of the blue as a granddaughter waves good-bye
after a typical weekend that did not involve death
	so mortal a question

and what if my son asked me
       what would I say

“yes, and
I hope life never comes to that.”
