		a toast

no scotsman came out of my womb
no scotsman learned to breathe amniotic fluid
			nestled deep within me
curled and coddled within my bones
					       my organs

he is not a true scotsman
	this child
		     this miracle
				   that came from me

he is no true anything
                      other than himself

he is creating his own world
and i am merely living in it
here to teach, to show, to suggest
here to keep safe from harm the best that i can
here to love this child, this miracle of nature

this boy that i call my own is not mommy or daddy
  			         is not boy or man

he is truly and utterly
	his own
		unique
			person

living this life full of wonder and focus
living this
              life
and showing me that mine is worth living
that life is worth noticing and focusing on

he may not be a true scotsman, may not play by the rules of others
and that is fine by me

let us toast to my son
		your sons
		your daughters
		myself
		and us all

So many children would be so much happier if their parents learned this sentiment early on.

Your child is who he or she is, and while you love and guide... they are not you, and they are not here to serve your goals.

Okay, I have never, ever thought of parenthood--or even my marriage, come to think of it--this way. And it's mind-blowing and utterly wonderful.

Thank you.
