		nevertheless, she persisted

she spoke the words of our predecessor
and she was told to be silent
she was told to sit down
she was told, implicitly, that her words do not matter

but his bid to silence her failed, explicitly
and, damn, her words matter

she followed his rules
	she shut her mouth
	but only in his presence
and only for a short time
she spoke the words she was told not to
she stood outside his door and she spoke the words of her foremother
				and herself
Liz spoke the words of Coretta

it turns out that we’ve been warned
about racism
about the nominee for attorney general
about how those two intersect in a venn diagram that looks like a single circle

and after she was silenced on the senate floor
after she was told to hush now, little girl
	men spoke
		reading from the same letter
reading the same words that were used to silence her
men spoke and were not warned of reprimand
men spoke and did not have things “explained” to them

men spoke after a woman was silenced

and i’m told we don’t need feminism anymore

i have one thing to say to that:

This was strong, enjoyable and powerful from every angle, the writing, the message the video. I utterly loved this with much respect.

(one can't say that with no comment)

Thank you. I was worried it might be close to cliché.

This is painful, in a necessary way.

I was very tempted to write on this subject, but am glad I didn't. You did great work. This story needs to be told and retold.

By the way, I've never heard of her referred to as Liz before.

I hadn't either, and I admit I didn't research it further, but one of the hastags going around is #LizPersisted and Liz worked better in the poem at the time. Though I am not sure any longer.

A really, really well-laid-out statement about the incident, about its context, about its larger meanings.

about how those two intersect in a venn diagram that looks like a single circle
Terrific line.

And the ending? So perfect for the occasion.

Thanks. I worried that it was going to come across as cliché or pandering or the such.

I am writing a LOT more political poetry than before. I mean, I used to write political poetry, just not as much as now.

SO incredibly timely and not cliche at all; just well thought out and lovely.

The thing about writing with a quick turnaround and deadline is the poems come out timely, for better or worse. I was just re-listening to this. I like it. That's a good sign. :-)

Your political poems are so very relate-able and so much needed at the moment. I enjoyed this as much as your previous entry. Well Done and I don't really think u need to worry too much on cliche ....

Thank you for this! And go Senator Warren! I'm proud to be from Massachusetts and to be from a state who has the intelligence to have elected her!
